the momentous tenth edition of franks friday.
huge thanks for all the congratulations (and the bouquet!). Read the rest of this entry »
lots of reforming chat tonight….the ‘definitive’ book is out next year carrying a large publishing advance and all of that, so it looks more likely this time. reni just now saying he’s not in though – it’s all or nothing surely.
this recording is from when it was all wide-eyed and genuinely exciting…..(fogged stream-of-conscious recall via the ’read more’ button – warning; contains colloquialism & local minutiae. mon.)
the stone roses, park lane shrewsbury 25/05/1989 (soundcheck and gig – mediafire)
bootleg description quoted from the bootleg guide on excellent fansite thestoneroses.co.uk
“Sound Quality: B - Clear and steady, but distorts during particularly loud sections. Sound check is in marginally better quality than the gig.
Performance Quality: A - Very melodic performance. Squire’s jangling guitar with Ian and Reni’s great vocals. This is one of Ian’s best ever live performances – not even a glitch on the chorus of Resurrection.
Why should I get this bootleg? The best ever live performance of Made Of Stone is on here, and great performances of Where Angels Play and Standing Here are too. Also funny to hear Ian shout to someone in the audience “Sit down man – you’re making a spectacle of yourself” and hear the audience all laugh at him. This causes a fight, which Ian tries to calm down during the opening to Adored!”**
The Sound Check (20 mins):
1. Ian solo singing verses of I Am The Resurrection
2. Ian clicking some drum sticks
3. Mani solo playing: an unknown bassline, She Bangs The Drums bassline, Waterfall bassline (small bit)
4. Squire solo playing very small bit of Waterfall
5. Mani solo playing She Bangs The Drums bassline, Waterfall bassline, unknown bassline, funky bassline
6. Roadies/crew/band/promoter talking
7. Squire solo playing part of Made Of Stone (x2), Elephant Stone intro, and final solo on I Am The Resurrection
8. Whole band playing vocals part of Waterfall (no backing vocals)
9. Ian complains he can’t hear Reni
10. Reni sings part of Waterfall solo
11. Squire and Reni briefly mess about
12. Whole band play I Am The Resurrection
The Gig (55 mins):
1. She Bangs The Drums
2. I Wanna Be Adored
3. Elephant Stone
4. Made Of Stone
5. Waterfall
6. Where Angels Play
7. Shoot You Down
8. Standing Here
9. Sally Cinnamon
10. I Am The Resurrection
many thanks to whoever originally recorded/uploaded/etc

the ep is released 21 november on hidden pony.
now then, this is seriously worth getting.
after what sounds like a drunken challenge, heavyfeet set themselves the task of remixing 8 current mancunian ‘indie’ bands in just one month. wanting to snapshot 2011 manchester whilst channelling spirits of late80s,early90s/madchester/balearic/indie-dance and taking it, like a carpark, next-level ….
listen below and get the full details here on their bandcamp
the narrows sound more impressive with each release. ’able danger’ is up for pre-order now via bandcamp and they’re playing the ruby lounge this friday.
have reprinted below a communication received from the narrows earlier today:
“(it is) in essence, a modern, dark, twisted treasure-hunt for grown-ups.
the dirty pamphlet will be a four-page pamphlet containing exclusivley commisioned art-work, an original short story and lyrics from our upcoming debut album.
most interestingly, the pamphlet will contain a phone number. and that’s all we’re going to say about that.
we aim to release the dirty pamphlet on saturday june 25th in as many places across the country as possible. there will only be a very limited amount available on a strictly ‘first-come-first-grab’ basis. they will be left in a particular place where people can pick one up.
a youtube video will follow on monday june 20th”
sometimes a band/ artist will manage to implant something they’ve created actually in your head. it could stay there forever if it was never overwritten. a snatch of lyric, a chord sequence, bonkers axe solo. at worst it’s an audio squatter thats crept into your brain, changed the locks and then just stomps round, manically shouting it’s ‘bit’.
so, with this unplanned metaphor thankfully ready to snap, todays earworm was the perfect guest – it was the guitar riff from
‘welcome back’ by the disappeared.
i’ve heard 4 tracks by them – ‘welcome back’ & ‘return to manhattan’ have totally got me. played ‘return to manhattan’ so much this weekend my girlfriend said, in a tone i couldnt quite interpret, “you REALLY like this don’t you…”
quick chat with singer Jeremy and he explained perfectly - “my favourite city (after Manchester, of course) and a list of my favourite bands. What’s not to like
“
…is always fantastic fun and more than often ends up with activities unexpected….
events this particular one involved a huge polar bear/small penguin combo, a cautious but entertaining newbie indie dj and a charming terry christian.
the north pole pop up bar in manchester is pretty ace. if ski chalet-chic is your thing then you”re absolutely sorted so go there sharpish . really nice staff, decent menu and best of all, good music. really good music.
great fun, lovely venue; it’s got antler chandeliers and fake sheepskin rugs. to paraphrase - ”fa-a-a-k-e r-u-u-u-g-s-s..”
later we headed to the northern – time always seems to get a bit muddled here and actually thats why it’s ace…..
anyway some music -
girl talk, all day. he’s done another samply album and it’s free via illegal arts which at the moment is struggling with demand – try a mirror here to get it…
it’s obviously in the entire nature of any art, but when a band who i love don’t get anywhere near the recognition i assume
they deserve, i am – probably still naively – shocked at the general populace.
performance have wrttten 3 of my absolute favourite tracks of recent times; bowie hasn’t done that.
the second album is out now – this site possibly isn’t the most objective place to find a review – but yes, generally, we like it.
it’s guitar, electronics, great voices/lyrics and above all, huge hooks. it’s edgy and euphoric and pop and dark enough to play at all points during that ’round ours for bite to eat eventually turning into full on 4am house do.’
if you liked reptile, surrender or the living you’re laughing – there’s a lot to like. o surgeon is particularly cut from the same cloth. similarly, the love is a simply a great big pop song and it’s fantastic. then, to handbrake you, eleanor comes along and it’s a beautiful, cinematic piece.
performance are supporting hurts at the moment. if you’ve any interest in any form of guitar based electronic music you’d be silly not to have a quick ganders at them…
