featured the alex gopher ‘rechoque redux’ remix and their own wazabi remix a bit back so you’ll know it’s all big room bonkers acid/electro/wiggly bits/large drums. massive buildups/downs are slightly restrained, increasing the tension.  full on but with really nice sharp edits behind the madness.  and then on the new album they even slip in a couple of really gentle flute & acoustic guitar led trad folk covers**.

the vocal cut-up in the waxdolls remix is my favourite bit of noise for some time.

“Sound Quality: B - Clear and steady, but distorts during particularly loud sections. Sound check is in marginally better quality than the gig.

Performance Quality: A - Very melodic performance. Squire’s jangling guitar with Ian and Reni’s great vocals. This is one of Ian’s best ever live performances – not even a glitch on the chorus of Resurrection.

Why should I get this bootleg? The best ever live performance of Made Of Stone is on here, and great performances of Where Angels Play and Standing Here are too. Also funny to hear Ian shout to someone in the audience “Sit down man – you’re making a spectacle of yourself” and hear the audience all laugh at him. This causes a fight, which Ian tries to calm down during the opening to Adored!”**

shrewsbury’s leading nightclub, park lane, was an absolute fucking shithole.

i know now it was simply the archetypal market-town niteclub and all that entails.  brilliantly stereotypical bouncers, the literal kickout at 2, neon, chrome, dj talkling before, between and over his records, shocking clothes and hair, really startling music, fluorescent proto-cocktail bar, a hot-food-counter, shit lager, the omnipresent threat of violence, and absolutely-no-jeans-or-trainers-are-you-fucking- joking pal?  you actually had to queue forever to get in.  and then pay.

to the right of park lane, up the flyover to woolies, was an adjoining venue.  this club – ‘the fridge’ – and park lane were connected yet divided, in so many ways.  much like the then still demarcated germany.  unlike germany this division comprised a large concertina-style folding door between the 2.  when the fridge closed for good it was done up and became ‘liberty’ – forget it’s exact usp, but think smaller, older, more relaxed than park lane.  ie no-fucking-trainers.  saturday nights the 2 ran autonomously until 11pm when, theatrically, the concertina doors were swung open* (*’slid laboriously across’ by 2 bouncers, anyone chatting unawares nearby shoved away with a cheery ‘fucking move, twat’).  from 11-2 liberty and park lane became one.  the whole space an apocalyptically  logic-defying, hooch-fuelled tableaux of tight-perms belting out chaka khan, ruddy faced farmers trying bobby brown moves, ‘ride on time’, stefan denis making it feel good,  the dj inevitably ‘slowin it downaliddlenow….c’mon guys, you know the score….’ ending with the get coat/get cab/get pizza/get punched/get lucky in the dingle/erection-section .  less studio 54, more area 51.

‘the fridge’ though hosted a weekly indie night.  it was shrewsburys’, hell shropshires’, premier indie-night. looking back through these tints it was brilliant –  the most unlikely, unbalanced crowd outside of a shelton open day, a mythical ‘melting pot’ made flesh - all dancing to the fall, sisters of mercy, ’20 seconds to comply‘,  ’she sells sanctuary’, jtq ‘starsky & hutch’, each holding warm red stripe and/or fag.  soundtrack provided by the grumpiest dj.  not moody, not darkly mysterious – grumpy.  it was like we’d mistakenly somehow locked ourselves in there and now had no other option but nervously phone him at home  - home where he’s nicely settled, plating up  his chip supper from Georges  - apologetically asking if he’d (sorry) reaaally mind (gulp) driving over with the (sniff, slight cry) (vocal pitch up) spare key please??.  begrudgingly and only at his speed, he’d eventually bring the key.  once unlocked,  he’d sigh heavily and decide to have a beer – he might as well, his fucking chips will be cold.  so with the cold chips causing a festering resentment to each & every one of us he stays.  he stays and ok YEESSS RIGHT,  he’ll play all the records.  all the while pissed-off-rather-be-home grumpy.  don’t even think about requests.   forever extolling to us the virtue of ‘stopping fucking jumping a-fucking-round’  because then his RECCCOORDS  might not SKIP so MUCH. (these last words pro-no-un-ce-d deliberately, with pure contempt. like at the end of the winterland gig)

 aaaaaahhhhhhh yes……………it was probably all shit really wasn’t it.

1988/89 saw a flurry of actual, promoted, good gigs at the fridge.  bob played.  the house of love played days before we saw them at reading festival (saw guy in reading pizza hut that weekend too). all good.  the most amazing fridge gig though was the stone roses. at the time seemingly the biggest band in the uk – certainly biggest in our world – coming to the fridge.  mere weeks after the lp came out, nme cover, it was all booked & confirmed. what?!  massive demand, mega excitement, unspoken fears it wouldn’t happen, something must go wrong.  but it happened and had to be bumped up to the bigger park lane.  those concertina doors were in action again…..

it all seems surreal even now.
